When materials that contain asbestos are disturbed or damaged, fibres are released into the air. When these fibres are inhaled they can cause serious diseases. These diseases will not affect you immediately; they often take a long time to develop, but once diagnosed, it is often too late to do anything. This is why it is so important to only allow a qualified asbestos removal company to dismantle either an asbestos garage or a garage roof with asbestos roof panels. Never dismantle a garage by yourself!

A4 Asbestos is a company of qualified removal experts. Removing asbestos from a garage roof can normally be completed in one working day. For more information please telephone our office at 0117 259 1425

Attempting to remove asbestos yourself

Attempting to dismantle your own garage can be incredibly dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing. Heavy materials like brick & concrete are hard to handle and can cause serious damage & injury if mishandled. Garage roofs & doors are equally as dangerous to take down since these are complex structures that need to be demolished professionally.

You might think that you can just demolish the entire structure with a bulldozer or something of the sort, however, garages with asbestos roofs are much harder to dismantle since demolishing the structure can damage the asbestos releasing toxic fibres that can become a huge health hazard. It’s for this reason that garage removal & garage roof removal is left to the professionals since they have the tools, expertise & knowledge to quickly and safely remove your garage.

A4 Asbestos can provide a professional garage removal service that takes care of every stage of the process. From initial survey to the full dismantling of the garage; A4 Asbestos takes care of it all. Our methods are proven since we’ve been providing top-level services for several years. Our service is also competitively priced since we’re an independent service provider, not charging huge overheads like a national company would.

An old garage roof isn’t a worry for most people, however, for some who know that their roof contains asbestos, it can be a concern when it comes to the wellbeing of the household. Most people are now aware of the issues that asbestos can cause, so it’s not a surprise that there is a need for asbestos garage roof removal.

Where did asbestos come from?

Asbestos has been a material used for thousands of years, with evidence of its use dating back to Roman times. Historically, asbestos has been an incredibly popular material due to its versatile properties. Asbestos was used in many ways, from paints to clothing and even pieces of armour.

After the Second World War, there was a huge housing boom with millions of families needing homes. Asbestos was a fundamental material when these houses were being built as it was used so abundantly. The use of asbestos was widespread, especially in roofing & insulation which is why we see such a large demand for garage roof removals now, since people are starting to move into and renovate homes that were built during the housing boom. It wasn’t until the 1980’s when legislation was put in place to stop the use of asbestos in all materials. It was found that exposure to asbestos was causing fatal and life-destroying health issues

Asbestos comes in three different forms, with shorter colour designations to simplify their identity. Crocidolite is known as blue asbestos, Amosite being known as brown and Chrysotile being known as white. Blue asbestos (Crocidolite) is referred to as the most dangerous since the airborne particles are particularly potent in their capability of mutating cells. All three types of asbestos were used in commercial & residential buildings, so it’s important for a provider like A4 Asbestos to be able to handle all three.

Because of its versatile traits, even garages that were built in the 60’s & 70’s contain asbestos in some form. These types of garages will often contain cement that contains around 10% to 15% asbestos.

Asbestos was a very popular insulation material as much as it was for roofing so finding traces of asbestos in your garage wouldn’t be surprising. Asbestos is hard to detect if you aren’t formally trained to identify the substance, as it takes a trained eye to be able to discern whether or not something has asbestos in it. If that’s the case then your garage will be removed with the utmost care & safety. All measures are taken to ensure the proper removal & disposal of asbestos so that the area is rendered completely safe after the garage removal service. A4 Asbestos are fully trained, licensed & qualified to dismantle garages that have asbestos within the structure.

Does my garage roof have asbestos?

Remova asbestos garage roof Swindon Bristol

Nearly all houses built prior to 1980 had asbestos in them, in some form. Floor tiles, ceiling tiles, roof shingles and flashing, siding, insulation (around boilers, ducts, pipes, sheeting, fireplaces), pipe cement, and joint compound used on seams between pieces of sheetrock. In other words, it was a common material to use.

Building garages with asbestos were the norm in the 1930’s through to the end of the 1970’s. This coincided with the period when homeowners could first afford cars and garages were built on their property utilising asbestos sheets.

Any dust that falls from an asbestos roof may contain the harmful and potentially life-threatening fibres. Many of the original roofs have either worn or been damaged over the years and now is probably the best time to remove them. Asbestos, as a building material usually lasts between 50 and 60 years and so if your garage was built even as late as 1966, it may be a good time to consider removing it.

The term “asbestos” fills us with worry before we’ve even found out what it really means. Asbestos in your home isn’t the dreaded death sentence we may think about when asbestos pops into our head but it is a cause for concern. Asbestos can be a health hazard to you & your family if dust & particles are able to travel around the environment you live.
With asbestos now banned in the UK, you won’t find any products in the UK that contains the substance. This doesn’t mean that you won’t find asbestos in the UK however, as it could still be present in parts of your home. From the paint to the piping, asbestos could be found anywhere.

Asbestos is a natural mineral that was heavily used in the concrete industry until the 1980’s when the use of asbestos was banned. Modern construction no longer uses asbestos reinforced concrete as there are other alternatives that provide a better reinforcement.

Asbestos can be found in many places in your home as it was used abundantly during the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s & the 80’s. From guttering, plumbing to insulation, asbestos was used in just about everything. It was especially useful for roofing which is why we see so many garages, outbuildings & sheds with asbestos roofs that are now having to be taken down due to rising concern. Many people are renovating older homes that were built in the 60’s & 70’s so the need for a reliable garage removal service has never been more abundant.

Should I attempt D.I.Y Garage Removal?

It’s hard to know if you have asbestos in your home or garage until a professional company takes a sample to check & verify the presence of asbestos. This can be easily done as samples can be sent to labs for verification. Asbestos can usually be left when it comes to its presence in homes but it isn’t terribly reassuring to know that a health hazard is just an accident away. Any unstable site of asbestos can be damaged to the point it releases asbestos fibres which is the main health hazard when it comes to asbestos.

When it comes to garage removal, hiring a professional company is almost essential as you are dealing with incredibly heavy elements like concrete roofing & bonded cement walls that may all contain asbestos. Not only is garage removal difficult, but with the risk of asbestos exposure, it really is a treacherous task that you will not want to DIY.

If your home was built before the 1980’s and has a garage then it most likely contains some form of asbestos. Whether it be in the paint, insulation, cement or roofing you can never really know until it has been tested, sampled or removed. If you are planning on a house extension and your old run down garage is in the way then a garage removal service is your only option. Does my garage roof contain asbestos?

You may be asking yourself “does my garage roof contain asbestos”? If the roof was added after 1999 it is highly unlikely to have asbestos content.

If the roof panels or sheets are grey in colour and NOT stamped with ‘NT’, then it is most likely to be asbestos cement. Other materials which may have been made into a garage roof are corrugated iron or reinforced plastic, although these are both much less common they are easy to distinguish from asbestos.

As well as asbestos in the roofing material it is fairly common to find the material in the ceiling of the garage. Modern garages mainly have the roof open with rafters showing. Many older garages had ceilings, with or without a loft, in the garage. Many of these were made with the material and asbestos garage ceilings are as common, if not more so, than asbestos roofing.

If you are in any doubt we can help you to sample your garage or garage roof for signs of asbestos.
