Nearly all houses built prior to 1980 had asbestos in them, in some form. Does my garage roof contain asbestos?
You may be asking yourself “does my garage roof contain asbestos”? If the roof was added after 1999 it is highly unlikely to have asbestos content.
If the roof panels or sheets are grey in colour and NOT stamped with ‘NT’, then it is most likely to be asbestos cement. Other materials which may have been made into a garage roof are corrugated iron or reinforced plastic, although these are both much less common they are easy to distinguish from asbestos.
As well as asbestos in the roofing material it is fairly common to find the material in the ceiling of the garage. Modern garages mainly have the roof open with rafters showing. Many older garages had ceilings, with or without a loft, in the garage. Many of these were made with the material and asbestos garage ceilings are as common, if not more so, than asbestos roofing.
